The Debian project announced the availability of the RC1 (Release Candidate 1) of the next Debian Linux version 11 (codename Bullseye).

In January, the freeze phase for Bullseye started. Since then packages have been tested and tested and tested again and now it's up to the community and (end-) users to install Debian 11 and report bugs.

According to the list of improvements in RC1, Debian 11 will run with Linux Kernel 5.10, the latest long term release of the Linux Kernel.

Bugs in Debian 11 RC1

In RC1 there are some important bugs mentioned which require fixing before the official (GA) release of Debian 11. The most important bugs seem to be the following ones:

  • Broken rescue mode with the graphical installer
  • amdgpu firmware required for many AMD graphic cards
  • GNOME may fail to start with some virtual machine setups
  • Desktop installations may not work using CD#1 alone
  • LUKS2 is incompatible with GRUB's cryptodisk support

Where to get Debian 11

The installation images/ISO files can be downloaded from the Debian Devel Debian-Installer page. ISOs are available in different formats and sizes. Usually the best and most common way to install Debian is to use the (small-sized) netinst ISO. Make sure you use the correct architecture for your machine's CPU.
